Course Introduction

Prince2 Fundamentals

Course Text

PRINCE2, which stands for Projects IN Controlled Environments, is a globally recognized project management methodology. Originally developed by the UK government's Office of Government Commerce (OGC) in the late 1980s, PRINCE2 has since become widely adopted across industries and organizations worldwide.
PRINCE2 provides a structured approach to managing projects, offering a comprehensive framework that guides project managers and teams through all stages of a project's lifecycle. It emphasizes the importance of clear organization, defined roles and responsibilities, effective communication, and continuous monitoring and control to ensure successful project delivery.
Key features of PRINCE2 include:
Principles: PRINCE2 is based on seven core principles that underpin its approach to project management. These principles include concepts such as continued business justification, learning from experience, defined roles and responsibilities, managing by stages, managing by exception, focusing on products, and tailoring to suit the project environment.
Processes: PRINCE2 defines a set of processes that guide the management of a project from start to finish. These processes include starting up a project, initiating a project, directing a project, controlling a stage, managing product delivery, managing a stage boundary, and closing a project. Each process has defined inputs, activities, outputs, and roles associated with it.
Themes: PRINCE2 incorporates seven themes that represent aspects of project management that must be addressed throughout the project lifecycle. These themes include business case, organization, quality, plans, risk, change, and progress. The themes provide guidance on how to effectively manage key aspects of a project, ensuring alignment with project objectives and stakeholders' needs.
Roles and Responsibilities: PRINCE2 defines specific roles and responsibilities for individuals involved in the project management process. These roles include the project manager, project board, team manager, project support, and others. Clear delineation of roles helps ensure accountability and effective communication within the project team.
Tailoring: PRINCE2 is designed to be scalable and adaptable, allowing organizations to tailor its principles, processes, and themes to suit the specific needs and characteristics of their projects. This flexibility enables PRINCE2 to be applied to projects of varying sizes, complexities, and industries.
Overall, PRINCE2 provides a comprehensive framework for managing projects in a controlled and organized manner, helping organizations deliver projects on time, within budget, and to the desired quality standards. Its widespread adoption and proven track record make it a valuable methodology for project management practitioners worldwide.
